With any movie based on freedom struggle you come to associate lotsof violence and rhetoric. This film also has loads of it, and avoidabletoo. What you must watch this movie for is its beautiful visuals. You’ll want to kiss Rajjo as sensuously as Nandu does while singingKuchh Na Kaho in scenic environs. Had Vidhu Vinod Chopra put in more ofromance and less of drama, this could very well have been one of theAll-Time Romantic Classics. Pancham’s arguably last compositions are afitting tribute to the departed music virtuoso, bearing the stamp ofhis genius. Simple lyrics penned by Javed Akhtar do justice to themusic by not being over cumbersome but flowing delectably along withthe tunes. You can sing along with Nandu driving in his car aroundKasauli, finding the entire beauty of nature in the girl he loves. Yes,you too feel like loving so completely that you forget your lines andrefer to her in rehearsals for a romantic play.
1942-A Love story has beautiful love elements butthe performance of the cast has been a big letdown, they just aren’tconvincing enough. They’ve everything going for them to put in all theycan but surprisingly their shoddy lack of effort pulls down the entiremagic quality to regrettably cliched and mechanical dialogue delivery.Manisha at least looks good as Rajjo.
By the end of the movie you’re not left content but wondering how beautiful it could’ve been.
